WARRINGTON Dolphins' Tom Roberts was crowned British Long Distance Swimming Association Senior Swimmer of the Year.

Roberts enjoyed a fantastic 2014 season, winning six senior races including the Champion of Champions nine-mile event.

Dolphins' Dee Llewellyn said: "When Tom won Colwick this year I asked him about Windermere and he thought he needed more experience.

"He went on to win Wykeham, Champion of Champions, Llyn Tegid (six miles) and Coniston.  With the experience gained he took second place at Windermere, following up with a win in St. Mary’s Loch (six miles).

"He is a swimmer for the future and a worthy nominee in his first senior season.  Not only is he a brilliant and fast swimmer but he always takes his time to encourage others and takes defeat graciously when he doesn’t win.

"He even had his own groupies at Windermere when a group of tourists asked for a photo with him."

Ellie Knight was awarded Most Promising Junior award for her successful season which included swims at Budworth , Bala and Wykeham, and former BLDSA secretary Andy Wright received an award for his outstanding services to the BLDSA.

Llewellyn added: "Ellie attended three championships this season at Wykeham, Llyn Tegid and Derwentwater, showing true dedication for a 12-year-old.

"She was placed second at Llyn Tegid after staying with two Veterans for most of the swim but put a spurt on to finish.  Ellie always has a warm smile as she gets out showing her enjoyment in the sport.

"Andy Wright was given a special award in recognition for his services to the BLDSA in the capacity of General Secretary and the Llyn Tegid Championship Secretary where he attracted record entries.

"Andy has stood down from both these roles this year but continues to help run the BLDSA Safety boats and train up others in his new capacity of RYA qualified power boat instructor.

"We thank Andy for his many hours of work for our association and wish Andy and his wife, Sandra well for the future."

Dolphins celebrated their 50-year anniversary in 2014, being awarded a special trophy for the club’s service to the BLDSA.
