CARYS McAulay took another step towards reaching the 2015 World Youth Games by scooping the English National Indoor under 20s women's 800m title.

The Warrington Athletics Club athlete, who turned 17 in January, now holds five national 800m titles, having also won the English Schools , British Schools, UK Schools and Scottish Indoor golds.

McAulay is now eyeing a win in the national selection trials at Bedford in June to reach the World Youth Games in Columbia.

"As coach and athlete, Carys and I discussed her targets for the summer and the main aim is qualification for the World Youth Games in July 2015," said coach Phil Hicken.

"Carys will also be hopeful of selection for the Scottish Team selection for the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in September.

"Both events will require Carys to meet the very difficult qualifying times and a win at the national selection trials at Bedford in June."

McAulay was among five Warrington AC athletes competing in Sheffield at the weekend at the English Institute of Sport.

She saw off runners two years her senior, settling for third in the heat on Saturday against Scottish under 20s record holder Mhairi Hendry.

In the final, McAulay found herself boxed in on the kerb as Hendry took the pace but did not panic and waited till the final lap when the field began to spread out.

With 100m left, she got a clear run and produced a superb finish to storm past Hendry as they entered the finishing straight to take the gold medal in 2mins 10.15secs.

In the under 15s boys’ 200m, Thomas Baines won his heat in 23.87secs to go through to the final. From there he narrowly missed out on gold in the final two strides to instead clinch silver in 23.64secs.

Under 17s sprinterFisayo Williamson-Taylor was sixth in his heat in the 60m on Saturday with 7.44secs before finishing fourth on Sunday his 200m heat in 23.72secs.

In the under 17s men’s 60m hurdles, Cameron Meakin finished fifth in his heat in 8.56secs, while in the under 17s women’s 800m Melissa Boyer finished fourth in her heat in 2mins 23.22secs.
