MIKE Cooper has this morning confirmed reports that he will not feature for St George Illawarra Dragons in the World Club Series clash with Warrington Wolves at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday, February 20.

The 26-year-old Warringtonian established himself as a first-team regular in his debut NRL campaign after departing Wolves following the Grand Final defeat to Wigan in 2013.

He would love to contest the expanded series against his old mates but needs to be close to home in Bulli, south of Sydney, due to partner Katie expecting their first child in early March.

Cooper had said back in October that he would have to make a decision nearer the time after having spoken to Dragons officials.

The former Bridgewater High School pupil told Warrington Guardian: “There is a possibility the baby could come early and if Katie went into labour while I was over there I could never forgive myself," he said.

"It was a no-brainer really. Katie would be out here on her own and I was not going to risk missing the birth for a game of rugby league.

“I'm gutted in a way because that game was one I really wanted to play but family always comes first."

Dragons, coached by Paul McGregor and his assistant Ian Millward, will nevertheless provide fiercesome opposition for Wolves.

Internationals from Australia, New Zealand and England's Gareth Widdop figure in the Dragons squad.
