GIRLS on a Warrington tennis programme represented the town in an international tournament.

LiveWire Tennis Academy's Rhona Cook, aged 12, and Katie Land, aged 11, competed in Portugal on a Nike Junior European Tour ranking event.

Cook, from Upton, won two under 12s girls' qualifiers and one match in the main draw when facing opponents from France, Spain and Portugal in the IV Memorial Luzio Vaz event in Coimbra.

Land, from Wrexham, featured in a qualifying loss to a Spaniard.

The pair, coached by LiveWire tennis development manager John Whitehall at Birchwood Leisure & Tennis Complex, were on the reserve list for the girls' doubles but did not compete.

Whitehall said: “Over the past few years the LiveWire Tennis Development Programme has gone from strength to strength.

"We cater for all ages and abilities, from beginners to elite level athletes.

"It is absolutely fantastic that, due to the hard work of the athletes and coaches, we have the opportunity to raise the profile of these talented athletes and represent the LiveWire brand at a prestigious event.”

Rafael Nadal, Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro are among the sport's stars to have previously played in the competition.
