Warrington 34 Kendal 7

WARRINGTON finally found form they have been threatening all season with a hammering of Kendal in North One West on Saturday.

It took just five minutes for the home side to take the initiative, when Tom Wood sent a precise kick to the corner and the forwards executed a driving maul from the lineout that saw Danny Fleming touch down.

The hosts created a flurry of opportunities, but had to settle for three penalties as reward for their dominance before the interval.

The second period began as the first had ended, with a penalty from Pat Roberts.

It was not long before Warrington started to unleash their most creative play of the season.

Zak Lythgoe fielded a Kendal kick in his own half and slipped the ball to Ashley Rockey at full speed.

The number eight burst through four tackles before going to ground to set up a ruck.

Wood probed a gap in the Kendal defence and fed Steve Pilkington who finished in the corner. Roberts converted from the touchline.

Warrington forced a set scrum in the Kendal 22 a quarter of an hour later, the front row providing good ball before the backs combined to create the space for Kevin Jones to score in the corner.

The home team, with momentum, could have scored twice more when Steve Pilkington was hauled down inches short and then when Jones made a sprint for the line only for his ageing legs to fail him.

However it was left to the veteran winger, who had been a last-minute replacement for Keiran Hughes, to seal Warrington’s bonus point.

A break from Max Walker forced a ruck 10 yards out and the ball flashed left to Jones who made no mistake.

Kendal had the last word with an interception try from their own half.

“This was a game where everything went right for us and everything went wrong for Kendal,” said coach Darren Abram afterwards.

“Every one of the squad stepped up to the plate.

“Our ball retention was excellent and we took our opportunities. I hope we maintain this form now.”

Warrington visit Carlisle, a side three places – and seven points – below them in the table, this Saturday.
