WARRINGTON Wolves fans and players have taken to social media to reflect on the 2014 season.

A TWEET from hooker Micky Higham after defeat at Wigan that read: “Gutted..... Not to be. Great advert for Rugby League #bestgameever” summed up the feelings of many, having lost out at the semi-final stage in both the Super League play offs and Challenge Cup.

But, having seen experienced players such as Lee Briers, Brett Hodgson, Garreth Carvell and Adrian Morley move on this time last year, many fans were able to reflect on a ‘transition’ season as a success.

@Lloydy_78 said: “Early expectations (transitional) were, ultimately, realised. But so close to over achieving given players we lost from 2013.”

@_legs11 added: “Losing our leaders last year, this year was always going to be difficult. So losing by 4 in the semi made me proud of the boys.”

While @A_Wire_Abroad commented: “A season of transition which had highs and lows but ended better than I expected, I'm very proud considering the injuries we had.”

One of the newcomers this season was Matty Russell, who, tweeting from @mattyrussell3, was pleased with the welcome he got from the primrose and blue faithful: “Fans have been outstanding all year for me personally for my first year, thanks a lot.”

The season also marked the end of Michael Monaghan, Trent Waterhouse and Chris Riley’s time with the club.

Among saying their goodbyes to the trio, supporters took to the Warrington Guardian Facebook page to share their hopes for next season.

Paul Lee commented: “If you would have said to me at the beginning of the season we'll finish 5th and be in two semi finals, I think I may have laughed.

“Good luck to all of the players who are leaving in your next conquests & for the existing players get back to full fitness and roll on 2015. Wire, Wire, Wire........”

Fan David Hemming hopes Tony Smith will strengthen his squad next year, he says they need: “A solid half back combo, and someone to support Hilly, he can't do all the work himself even though he has been immense for two seasons now.”

Dawn Spencer added: “Sad to see Michael and Trent go but the new signings so far for next year bode well. I think there's still room for one more.

“Someone who can finally stop everyone talking about Briers he was amazing but he's not coming back. Well done boys.”

And there were plenty of tributes reserved for Wolves’ retiring captain Monaghan, led by teammate Chris Bridge.

@Bridgey_1984, alongside a picture of ‘Monas’ said: “Gonna miss this bloke amazing player even better bloke #alneverforget”

@MarkTickle7 added: “Michael Monaghan. Up there with @briers6 and Bevan as true Warrington legends. Adored by the fans, massively missed!!”

“Thank you Michael Monaghan. One of the best ever,” said @LewMelia.

And @jesshill13 concluded: “Thankyou Michael Monaghan for your time here at Warrington, true wire!!”
