VICTORY for Warrington Wolves’ under 19s team in their Super League curtain-raiser on Thursday would see them clinch the Academy league leaders’ trophy.

The young Wolves face their Wakefield Trinity Wildcats counterparts at 5.30pm, with a trophy parade due to take place before the Super League clash should they be successful.

Head of youth, junior recruitment and development Ben Lazenby believes a top-place finish is what head coaches Danny Fullerton and Lee Briers’ troops deserve.

“It’s been a really positive year,” he said. “The efforts of the coaching staff have been outstanding and everything has been spot on in training, from the strength and conditioning to Lee Briers and Danny Fullerton. This is their rewards.

“They have been really mature for a group of young lads. The older lads have come on leaps and bounds but the most pleasing thing is the first years who have led by example in some areas.”

And Lazenby is confident this talented group of youngsters can go on to achieve big things.

“We’ve had Joe Philbin, George King and Toby King make their first team debuts,” he explained.

“But there is Dec Patton, who has signed a first team contract, and Tom Walker in there as well. That’s five that have already made the move up and hopefully we will see more next year.

“I’m sure next year even some we simply can’t retain ourselves will eventually make it at the highest level elsewhere.”
