Grappenhall Sports 3 Egerton 1

GRAPPENHALL Sports boss Darren Davies is delighted to be sitting top of the Cheshire League One after another home victory.

Denico Walters scored twice and Sean Preston bagged on his debut to seal the points for the hosts, while Marcus Adigun also came off the bench for his debut.

Davies said: "This was a very scrappy game but another three points at home. We have won four from four at home and if we can keep up a similar record all season we will be in a good place.

“I thought Marcus was superb on debut and Sean came on and added a new dimension and he capped off his display with a very well taken goal.

“It's been so important to have the big squad we have even this early in the season and to see two more additions do so well on debut is fantastic.

“We have a cup game on Saturday and it will be a nice break from the league. We went top of the league tonight, it might only be for 24 hours, but it's a great feeling and hopefully the boys will want more of it.

“We've still got room for big improvements, and we will need to improve but it's a very respectable start to the this seasons league campaign"

Debuts were given to central defender Adigun and striker Preston, who played the last half an hour from the bench.

Jody Lewis also made his first team bow this season to cover the unavailable Gareth Powell in goal.

Once Sports settled they began to establish some control and half chances came and went for Walters, Dan Sisson and debutant Adigun had a header cleared off the line.

On half an hour the pressure told when Walters capitalised on a defensive error to slam home from a tight angle.

Sports made it two on 40 minutes when an Adam Rosterne corner reached Walters again, who reacted quickest to slam home.

The long ball and set pieces of Egerton were causing some problems and eventually the pressure told when Sports failed to deal with a cross and a mishit shot scrambled past the defender and keeper and into the net on 56 minutes.

Egerton continued to look dangerous with the long ball and they were earning more and more set pieces and corners and even regular long throw ins were having to be dealt with.

Adigun and Danny Macintyre were dealing with most but the bounce of the ball and element of luck was crucial at times.

Sports did start to play more sensibly and were earning chances on the break. Walters put in a super cross that Sisson failed to convert and Adigun nearly topped his brilliant debut with a goal but hit it over from close range. Walters also forced a fine point blank save from the keeper.

In the final moments Preston engineered some space for himself expertly in the box to smash home and secure the points.
