TONY Smith confirmed Richie Myler and Roy Asotasi were dropped for Warrington Wolves’ clash with Castleford Tigers as a result of their performances in the Challenge Cup semi-final loss to Leeds Rhinos.

Asked if his decision to start Chris Bridge and Gareth O’Brien in the halves was forced throught injury or a selection choice, Smith said: “Last week our half backs didn’t control the play well enough so we went elsewhere and tried a different combination again.

“There’s a consequence to not performing and sometimes it’s by missing out, though it’s not always that way.

“We’ve got a lot of fresh bodies at the moment and a lot of people who are vying for positions.

“If you don’t perform, you miss out.

“When there’s injuries, you get your job anyway. When there’s people lining up for a go you’ve got to make sure you take your opportunities.”

Smith previously showed he was not accepting underperformance when leaving joint skipper Bennie Westwood out of the team for the game against Catalan Dragons in France a fortnight ago.

Fully agree with this decision .Myler was so indecisive last week and Asostasi keeps on confirming he is very ordinary....waste of an overseas spot. A couple of others were very lucky not to join them. Waterhouse had another nightmare last night and Grix needs to improve considerably. A win is a win but why did we struggle to contain Castleford Reserves who managed to secure so many repeat sets?

Myler is not performing but we must not forget his defense and effort in defense. I think Ratchford seems to escape criticism, he needs to show more of a lead-last night he spent most of the time on the wing and did not look that keen to get involved. Maybe the likes of Westwood and co are sick and tired of giving everything very week, they always lay their bodies on the line. Its about structure and sharing the work, and a system which gives impact players a chance to rest during the game. TS has enjoyed the plaudits, but our demise -look at the attendances- show he has not sorted a half back or improved our ball handling. The atmosphere was dire last night, and why did he leave a limping Monaghan out there so long! Says a lot about his confidence in our other playmakers.

I still think Tony Smith is the right man though. I know it's not been a great season but were going to make the play offs (should do anyway) and just remeber, its our first season without our main playmaker.

Lets see what happens in the last of the league games and the playoffs, then another full pre season for the half backs to get sorted, if they don't perform next year then there's no excuses, will be time to get the cheque book out.

I struggle to see why O'Brien gets dropped in favour of Myler for the big games. His passing and kicking game is far superior and he works very well with Chris Bridge as the other half.

I t would be interesting to see what good a massive vote of confidence would do for O'Brien's game ,& the best vote of confidence would be to give him the number 7 shirt next season.

Agree with all of the above, O'Brien needs to be given a vote of confidence. I think cheap has it right mostly, but we knew we had a problem at half back three years ago as Briers clearly had a neck problem and could not go on forever. The top teams make sure half backs are in place as the top priority. Cas picked up Finn because he can direct and distribute. I am not sure our preseason training has been of any great value and it certainly hasn't helped our completion rate. You cant lose Briers and Hodgson and not replace with at least one similar player. Hope I am wrong, but by looking at recent crowds faith in TS is dwindling.

Not to sure about whether Myler is to blame other times without him we have also been poor, take Fridays game no Myler and we still had no real direction with the only guile and breaks coming from a man about to retire, I feel it goes a little deeper, maybe spirit of 55's article our way gets nearer to TS's thinking with regards to the halves mixing and matching them with Higham, Mona's and Grix when all available, the STs magic and Leeds home game plan, with no one the main play maker (target) I think we will see more of that style.

Of course if we sign Clark he will slot right into that TS way, giving us so many more options and chances for Myler to follow up, of course on present showings a half back has to be signed leaving Ratchford and Bridge to their best positions.

I can remember Lee Briers when he first started and I think given time and a long run at half back O 'Brien could keep that spot but if TS keeps playing around with the half backs we will probably end up losing him to yes a team like Castleford who can play football.
How long does it take for the penny to drop regarding Mylers kicking and attacking game surely Mr Koucash would have him back a Salford, some hope of that considering the salary he must be on.

I was told in confidence to be patient as the stand off position was as good as sorted for next season no player name given, from an Ex player non wire and very reassuring, I got the feeling that when/if the news breaks it's to come from the club so he wasn't prepared or couldn't go into full detail.

Rumour you can't beat a good rumour.
