IT'S MY VIEW: 50:50 calls play part in outcome

THERE are so many ‘ifs and buts’ to ponder this week in the aftermath of a deflating Challenge Cup semi-final defeat.

We’re all wondering if the right team was selected, playing Chris Bridge in the centres after starring in the influential half-back role for three months.

That meant Stefan Ratchford and Richie Myler combining at number six and seven for the first time since April 11, while putting Bridge and Joel Monaghan back in tandem on the right flank having not paired up since April 18.

Matty Russell, Ryan Atkins and Ben Westwood were welcomed back after a week off duty and with Michael Monaghan, Trent Waterhouse, Paul Wood, Simon Grix and Myler all having only recently returned from long injuries, was it too many changes in a short period of time and too many lacking in full match sharpness?

The truth is, we’ll never know if a different outcome would have surfaced from different selections.

Certainly nobody in their right mind would argue Wolves deserved to win on Saturday on the back of their first-half showing.

But if any number of the 50:50 decisions or occurrences that seemed to go Leeds’ way had swung in Warrington’s favour, especially in the opening 40 minutes, it could have made a difference because I thought Leeds were there for the taking.

I’m referring to moments like Matty Russell’s pass to a try-line bound Richie Myler being judged as forward, broken play from a bouncing high kick ending up in the hands of retreating Leeds defender Kallum Watkins, Ryan Hall’s opening try being awarded as benefit of the doubt by video referee Ben Thaler and his second score coming from a forward pass.

How on earth was the ‘incidental and non-deliberate poke in the eye’ by Zak Hardaker on Chris Hill, that understandably led to the prop dropping the ball as he tried to touch down, not picked up as a penalty at least by Thaler?

And how did the officials miss Kylie Leuluai flattening Anthony England off the ball in the first half?

Sour grapes? You bet it is, because it was our year!

You're right Mike 50:50 calls have a massive bearing in any game, how the ref interprets an incident, what a he chooses to see or ignore are all part of the game, but of course you have to have at least 50% of the game to get a share, would you agree early on we had only around 25% meaning we were well off the pace.
No doubt all the injuries have played a part throughout the season, playing too many not fully match fit players must have had a bearing on the wire performance as it takes awhile to reach match fitness, the half back pairing is nowhere near being settled yet and seems an eternity away from being resolved, on that point Mike do you know of any superior rumour/whisper of that being sorted for next season.
Yours in anticipation Wolfitdown.

Having watched the game again today on tv , it was ,as the teams were concerned ,fairly even & when on the front foot we looked the better of the two teams. Both defences were awesome & the 50/50s & putting ourselves under needless pressure told in the end. Having watched Ryan Hall's 2nd try ,as far as i was concerned it was good ,but the ref did seem to put every rule book impediment in our way at every opportunity. A Leeds player ran into one of his own men in the 2nd half & no infringement whereas Russell's incident was a kickable penalty. I was amazed how many of our passes were adjudged as forward in comparison to those of Leeds. Overall though a fairly evenly matched game that on another day could have gone our way.

Looking forward for the balance of the season (and hopefully a Grand Final appearance) the club coaches need to bring some continuity to the side particularly in the halves. I feel Myler has been poor all season when selected and Ratchford is too much of an individual to control planned plays. For me it's Bridge and O'Brien in the halves as they were part of a great run of form and if I had to accomodate Ratchford, i'd play him a full back as i believe he would offer more options in attack than Matty Russell. having said that Scotland got the best out of Russell regarding his ability to find the line. Some learning there perhaps. Tonight if we don't beat Cas reserves we will know just how big a problem we have in the run in to the GF.

Cheers Mike I understand your view as ever given with a fair and open opinion, it wasn't a criticism in any way believe me I share your disappointment, my post was filling in with hopefully some constructive excuses, I go to games prepared to accept that what will be will be, swings and roundabouts and all that, as for the players I believe they give 100% every game although they don't always get it right.

PS. no superior rumours then.
