Warrington Wolves' performance frustrates Michael Monaghan

Monaghan hurt by performance

Monaghan hurt by performance

MICHAEL Monaghan knows this was his last shot at another Challenge Cup success, but admits it was the performance and not the semi-final loss that hurts the most.

Monaghan is set to retire at the end of the year and felt Wolves did not perform to their potential against Leeds Rhinos at Langtree Park.

Already a past Challenge Cup winner, the joint-skipper said he found the manner of Wolves’ loss frustrating.

“I knew it was my last chance to win it,” he explained. “But not winning it is probably not the disappointing thing, losing a game where we should be winning is what’s going to frustrate me.

“It would have been great to get back there but just not performing in a big game is what probably hurts the most.”

Monaghan always believed Wolves could fight back despite trailing throughout, and is now determined to put everything into securing a first Grand Final success.

“Even with a couple of minutes to go, I watched an NRL game this morning and there was a team who came back from two tries down in the last two minutes to win, so with 20 to go we were still in it,” he added.

“We spoke about not giving up regardless of the scoreline. Being down 14-0 probably helped us a bit in that second half, we forgot about the scoreline and result and just worried about playing footie.

“You could see it was much better, but you do that much defence in the first half and it leaves you vulnerable at the back end of the game.

“I grew up watching it (Challenge Cup final), the old man was a footie tragic and used to drag us up to watch the final. I knew about the Aussies and how big it was to win it.

“But it leaves us now with one opportunity at trying to win something and we’ll go hard at that.”

Maybe "captaincy by committee" doesn't work . One man pulling the strings with a vice captain might work better.

Captain doesn't matter at the end of the day, you go on the pitch giving 100%, captain or not.

Maybe the joint captaincy decision was down to no one obvious stand out choice so that is what we have, I beleive that the joint captaincy had nothing to do with the under performance, poor handling and wrong options ran throughout the team so I understand Mona's feelings, possibly too many changes with the return of so many long term absentees ? so looking forward will the team perform like that again this season, well more importantly when it matters.

To win a big game you need your halves to perform and move you around the park. Why change the halves yet again and play a player whose form has not reached great heights this season - Myler. Best half back pairing - based on results is O'Brien and Bridge. If it works why change it???

Latest posts all seem to agree that our problem is a lack of cohesion at halfback. TS has not done anything to resolve this issue. He took credit for a revival (based on injuries) when in truth he had no alternative other than to play O'Brien and Bridge and other youngsters. Great coaches provide a structure and method which allows interchange, eg Cas, Wigan and Saints. If we lose a player we fall to pieces.
Sorry TS, Carvell looked good yesterday and I am still waiting for Asotasi to break the line. I hope Monaghan reconsiders and that Clarke's signing is more than a fantasy, because without intelligent players we are done. If we miss out on the Aussie playoffs next year, I hope Moran finds out why TS fiddled as Rome burned?

I could not agree more with pennstates comments regarding Warrington halfbacks. Why he dropped o Brien who will take on defences and has the perfect kicking game in favour of Myler who cannot kick a ball and does not take on the opposition is beyond me. Myler in my opinion is over rated and just a back up player. Could we not sign a top kicking halfback for the salary we are paying for Myler.

Thought Atkins earned his wedge on Saturday, as did Benny Harrison.
Woody seems to be getting passed his sell by, I would have favoured Currie instead. Agree with the comments about Asotasi, hopefully Ashton Simms will make a bigger impact for us next season - My biggest gripe all year has been the non selection of G.O'B over Myler..... The O'Brien / Bridge pairing seems to have been the most successful and exciting combination we've had. My previous comments re. Matty Russell still stand

Asotasi, is one of the worse signings I seen play for the wire; the guy is just not interested. His spot on the bench was wasted on Saturday. Did he wanna play at wembley.............

We could ...but myler has another year on his contract...which other club would take Myler on his salary :/ myler is the 'senior' HB with go'b learning & being guided by him....I'm sure he would like a decent HB to play alongside & learn from...as Myler did for 5 years with Briers.

To win a game you need to keep hold of the ball and complete your set of sixes. Far too often this season we haven't been doing this. These are the same players who have just gone on an extended wining run. The players are good enough to win the league and Grand Final but if you can't keep hold of the ball then.........
