A BRONZE medal has been won in the Commonwealth Games pool by a former Warrington Sports Personality award winner.

All the training hours since a young age are continuing to pay off for former Newman High School pupil James Guy.

The 18-year-old has added a 400m freestyle Comonwealth Games bronze in Glasgow to his growing honours board.

Last year he led the Great Britain swimming team’s charge with three medals at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai this week.

Silver successes in the 200m and 400m freestyle races were topped off with a relay gold in record-breaking fashion from the Warrington Under 11s Sports Personality of 2007 winner.

Guy made his senior international debut at the World Championships in Barcelona last year following on from clinching two European junior titles, on the back of claiming double bronze at the British Gas Championships.

Guy has married specialist swimming coaching with education at Millfield School in Somerset since leaving Warrington in 2008.

Back in 2007, the former Stockton Heath resident impressed Sports Personality judges with his dedication – the ex-Our Ladys pupil regularly waking up for training at 4.10am.

He was reaping early rewards, winning eight medals (six gold) in the National Age Group Championships that year.

Guy started swimming at the age of five, joining Swim Trafford when he lived in Altrincham and he had won more than 300 medals before leaving the town.
