WARRINGTON Wolves joint skipper Michael Monaghan has announced he will retire from the game at the end of the current season.

Monaghan has been with the club since 2008 and was an integral part of Challenge Cup Final successes in 2009, when he won the Lance Todd Trophy as man of the match, 2010 and 2012.

The 34-year-old helped the team to its first League Leaders' Shield success in 2011 and appeared in Grand Finals with the club in 2012 and 2013, following on from his NRL Grand Grand Final defeat with Manly in 2008.

Monaghan, whose younger brother Joel will remain with Wolves, is looking to go out at the top and move into coaching.

He said: “It’s been a privilege playing here for seven years; winning Challenge Cups and playing in Grand Finals.

"It’s all gone better than I could have hoped for or expected.

"I’ve enjoyed my time here and the atmosphere created by the fans over the years has been great.

"I am looking forward to moving on in the game, hopefully into a coaching role whether that’s here or elsewhere. With Joel still at Warrington and me being engaged to an English girl I’m obviously keen to stay over here for a while.

“A massive thank you to everyone who has made my time at the club so enjoyable and I look forward to hopefully ending my time here on a high.”
