LEE Briers praised the composure of his young charges as they moved level on points with Leeds Rhinos at the top of the under 19s league.

Wolves travelled to the Rapid Solicitors Stadium on Saturday and comfortably saw off hosts Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Tries from Jordan Crowther, Declan Kay, Sean Kenny, James Jones, Jake Eccleston and two for Brad Goulding, added to by the boot of Harvey Livett, brought up the 4-31 win.

Academy coach Briers said: “The composure of the boys with the ball in such horrendous conditions was awesome.

“The way that we coped showed great maturity and gave us a good platform to play with confidence and great shape in attack.

“Also our enthusiasm in defence showed the commitment that they all have for each other and to only concede one try, which came from our mistake, is a magnificent effort.

“We have another tough game coming up this Friday when we entertain Leeds in a top of the table curtain raiser before the Super League clash and it would be great to see as many supporters as possible get down early to support the lads. Kick off is 5.30pm at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.”

Fellow coach Danny Fullerton added: “I was extremely pleased with every one of the seventeen especially the lads who came back into the side.

“Each one of them performed to the standards that we have set and can be rightly proud of their efforts.

“The smart attacking options that we used really caused Wakefield problems and allowed us to score some top quality tries but the most pleasing aspect was the resilient defensive effort that we put in.

“Daniel Hirst had a great impact from the bench while Declan Kay and Ben Stansfield switched seamlessly with each other from full back to wing during the game and put in top performances.

“We will now work very hard in training during the week to ensure that we are in the best possible condition for the Leeds game.”
