United's veterans clinch league and cup double

MOORE United feel they have done their club founder proud with double success in the Cheshire Veterans Football League.

The team have added cup glory to their league title success.

Secretary Keith Sheridan said: “This historical league and cup double is a fitting tribute to Moore United’s founder Billy Green, who sadly passed away earlier in the season.”

United defeated Premier Division outfit Grappenhall Sports 3-2 in the Cheshire Veterans Cup Final at Egerton Football Club in Knutsford.

It followed securing the Division One title under manager Scott Taylor with 11 wins from 14 games, leaking only 10 goals in the process.

Moore needed a second strike from Kris Taylor in the second period of extra time to see off Grappenhall.

Sports looked to have taken control of the game after turning round 0-0.

Fergus Morris was allowed time inside the box and he bundled his way through the defence before smashing the ball in.

Moore bounced back immediately when Kris Taylor was put through and crashed the ball home.

Moore went ahead in the 75th minute when Anthony Hyde raced down the right wing, cut inside and curled a left footer over the keeper into the top corner.

Two minutes later Grappenhall were awarded a penalty for a foul on Dave Coyne, who calmly converted himself for 2-2.

As soaring heat took its toll on players’ legs in both teams, the Moore men seemed to have the extra fitness levels.

Flat-footed Grappenhall defenders were nowhere to be seen when Kris Taylor was sent clear to casually finish off the job.

Although Grappenhall threw everything at Moore in the final minutes, the back four and keeper stood firm and blocked any efforts on goal.
