MORE than 100 bowlers competed in the Warrington Women’s Afternoon Bowls League’s 75th anniversary competition.
At the end of a long milestone day at Tetley Walker, Wynne Wright and Jean Greig proved to be the perfect partners as they defeated Marie Bacon and Julie Chapman 11-10 in the final.
With partners only drawn at the start of proceedings, intriguing action unfolded in the Redline Recruitment supported event before the cash prize was settled.
Organiser Tracey Lawson, the league’s secretary, said: “It took a lot of running around to organise but it was worth the effort.
“Everybody wanted a fantastic day, which is what we had.”
As well as being competitive, the event was fun and watched throughout by the Mayor of Warrington Clr Peter Carey, who posed for pictures with the players and helped with the raffle.
“We had party hats and I made everyone wear them,” said Tracey. “Even the Mayor had one on.”
The quality of bowling shone through some poor weather.
“Although the weather was a challenge, the ladies battled on and we experienced some high class bowling,” said Tracey.
“The final was equal to first class bowling and was made even more special by Marie Bacon being one of the bowlers who attended when the league was celebrating its 50th.”
Warrington Women’s Afternoon Bowls League is a historic organisation, being one of the oldest sporting associations for women in the country.
