EAGLE Sports’ challenge for the Cheshire League Division One title came to an end with defeat to fierce rivals Greenalls Padgate St Oswalds.
The men from Thornton Road, completed their campaign at Styal last night, Wednesday, went into the final three games of the season needing maximum points to make sure they finished first.
That sequence started strongly with a 2-0 win against Styal on Bank Holiday Monday.
However a tough away fixture to the newly-crowned Guardian Cup winners put an end to their dream after Lee Boardman’s opener was replied to by goals in each half from the home side.
It marked a first league defeat since the turn of the year.
Eagle came back to challenge Garswood, who have won four trophies during a successful campaign, with a 14-match unbeaten sequence from January.
“We got left too far behind earlier in the season and couldn’t catch up,” said manager Rob Hope.
“We fought hard but just fell short at the end to a good Garswood side.”
