OPPOSITION CORNER: Saints looking for Magic Weekend revenge on Sunday

Warrington Guardian: Saints beat Wolves on opening day of Super League season Saints beat Wolves on opening day of Super League season

MAGIC Weekend pits high-flyers St Helens against rivals Warrington Wolves in Sunday’s 5pm finale.

Wolves won this fixture 48-22 last year but Saints boast the better form heading into the clash at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Nine wins on the bounce, including victory against Warrington, came to an abrupt end with back-to-back defeats to Wigan Warriors and Widnes Vikings before a Tetley’s Challenge Cup exit at the hands of Leeds Rhinos.

Saints bounced back to winning ways with a 48-18 success against London Broncos and did what Wolves could not two weeks ago by beating Bradford Bulls on Sunday.

Saints put 50 points on Francis Cummins’ side without reply to put pressure on Leeds Rhinos at the top of the Super League table.

Warrington recovered from losing at Odsal by enjoying a convincing victory at home against Catalan Dragons, but will be wary of a Saints side who have already got the upper hand on them once this season.

That victory for Nathan Brown’s side came at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on the opening day of the Super League season and was all but over by the break with Saints leading 4-20 at half time.

Tries from Tommy Makinson, James Roby, Kyle Amor, Anthony Laffranchi, Adam Swift and Luke Walsh completed the rout.

Makinson is second-placed Saints’ top try scorer with 14 in 13 appearances so far this campaign and the winger will be hoping to help them win a first trophy in five years this season.

Injuries mean Saints will be without pre-season signing Amor, (knee ligament), Willie Manu, Laffranchi and Mark Percival.
