JOEL Monaghan is aiming for his latest Magic Weekend experience to be as memorable as the last two at the Etihad Stadium.

The younger brother of Wolves hooker Michael scored five tries in the 68-4 success over Widnes Vikings at Manchester City’s home ground in 2012, while Warrington fans’ debut performance of the popular ‘Joel and Michael Monaghan song’ spectacularly dominated a carnival atmosphere in the stands as Wolves celebrated a 48-22 thumping of St Helens last year.

Tony Smith’s men face Saints again at the former Commonwealth Games stadium on Sunday, with scoring machine Joel going into the ‘derby’ on the back of his 100th try milestone in Wolves’ much improved performance against Catalan Dragons in Super League Round 12.

“The five tries was a special day, and it’s pretty cool to have a song being sung about us,” said the 32-year-old former Canberra Raiders and Sydney Roosters winger or centre, who has pulled on shirts for Australia, New South Wales and the Exiles at representative level.

“Someone sent me a link to one of the videos (of the fans singing), and there’s a blue smurf in a Warrington jumper. You know you’ve made it when a smurf’s singing your name out (Watch the video)

“We’re both pretty humbled by the singing to be honest and I think the Warrington fans are the best ones in the competition. The crowd’s always awesome at the Magic Weekend and hopefully we can give them another memorable weekend.

“Saints embarrassed us in the opening game of the season, and especially at home we don’t like any team doing that.

“They’ve been one of the form teams of the competition so far and our performance against Catalan was good for us. We needed it. Hopefully we can kick on with the season from here.”

Only fellow Australian Brian Bevan, going back to the 1940s, has scored a ton of tries in Warrington colours faster than Joel.

Bevan managed the feat in 84 games, compared to Joel’s 100 since joining the club in 2011.

“Scoring 100 in 100 does have a ring to it,” said Joel.

“It’s a reflection of the players I’ve played with over the time I’ve been here.

“I don’t have to do too much for them, most of them go down to the players inside me.

“Just to be mentioned in the same sentence as a legend of the club like Brian Bevan is pretty special.

“When I got to 50 I think he had me by a game, but he went on to score another 600 or so after that.

“I knew a little bit about him before I came here, with his world record statistics. To have come here and now seen his statue and the Brian Bevan wall, it’s mind-blowing actually. So this is all pretty special.”
