TONY Smith highlighted his key areas to Wolves’ success over Catalan Dragons.

He pinpointed the selection of experienced players, strong defence and a much improved kicking game in a response to recent poor form in Super League.

Wolves, with Stefan Ratchford and Ben Harrison joining Gene Ormsby in returning to the starting line-up, ended the French team’s four-match winning streak.

“It was just a better performance,” said, Wolves' head of coaching and rugby.

“We’ve been working hard on some things but this was not just about a response.

“We had a few more of our more senior players available to us and that showed.

“They’re getting into some fitness so they can start in the team, so it makes a difference.

“All the people who have been in there have been doing a good job for us, doing their best.

“It’s hard to be thrown in and expected just to gel straight away. That comes with some of the more experienced players who are able to bring some of that back to us.

“Hopefully over the next few weeks we can keep on impressing.

“And there were aspects of our game – our defence was very good.

“It was also very good last week on a lot of occasions. I think we missed 12 tackles last week and I bet we missed more tackles tonight but conceded two tries, and one of them was right at the death off a kick.

“We’ve still got work to do on aspects of our game but I thought the other massive improvement in us tonight was our kicking game.

“I think we had one poor kick that we didn’t get past the opposition with a ricochet.

“But most of the balls bounced our way tonight as well. I felt for the Catalans – they’re a good team and will dish some teams up this year, put some big scores on some teams because they’re a dangerous side.

“A lot of what they can do is unique to the Catalan Dragons. I admire the way they play and I like watching them play, but it wasn’t going to be their night.

“Some people will write them off but they’ll bounce back and bounce back with some vengeance as well I reckon.”
