WARRINGTON Wolves are aware of the dangers Catalan Dragons can pose when they arrive at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday on a four-game winning streak in Super League.

Dragons’ form coincides with Wolves posting successive Super League losses, but both sides have been recently beaten by Bradford Bulls.

However, Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith expects his defence to step up against the attacking threat of the Perpignan side.

“They’ve certainly improved in recent times,” he said. “Obviously they won’t have regarded their Bradford performance as one of their best, likewise in that respect, but they probably had a slow start to the season and have come into some good form.

“They’re a dangerous team and play a fairly expansive style of rugby and they certainly throw the ball around and challenge defences.

“We’ve got to work on that and we’ve been working on some of those aspects of our game, so hopefully Catalan’s attack is the right sort of challenge for us to stand up and get our defensive efforts in the right order.”

Despite recording their second lowest number of missed tackles this season in the Bradford loss, 12, Warrington paid the price for mistakes in key areas.

“It didn’t equate to a score line that makes us happy,” added Smith. “So it probably shows you where you make your mistakes and whether you’re covering for each other when you do, it highlighted that for us at the weekend, when we made mistakes we paid a price.

“When you come up against a dangerous team like Catalan, hopefully you’ll get some of that urgency where you do cover for each other and you do cover each other’s back as a good team does.”
