Warrington Town 3 Prescot Cables 2

A LAST gasp winner from super sub Ben Wharton secured victory for Warrington Town over local rivals Prescot Cables.

The victory keeps Warrington on course for a home play-off game a week on Tuesday if they can secure a result in the final league game away at Harrogate next Saturday.

Warrington got off to the best possible start with a debut goal for recent signing Shaun Tuck who cut into the box and rounded former Town shot stopper Richie Mottram to slot the ball home in the third minute.

With Town dominating the opening stages Scott Metcalfe saw a great volley tipped over the bar by Mottram on 15 minutes. As the game wore on the visitors came more into the game.

Town held on to a narrow 1-0 half-time lead but the visitors equalised on 54 minutes when Robert Doran smashed a free kick against the bar and then rifled home the rebound on 54 minutes.

Warrington then saw two headers from Carlos Meakin cleared off the line.

Manager Shaun Reid rang the changes bringing on Wharton for Bowen and Gahgan for Dawson.

The change paid off as Gahgan slipped the ball through for Wharton who fired the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-1 on 78 minutes.

But within two minutes Prescot were back on level terms as Doran grabbed his second with a curling free kick.

With the clock ticking into extra time Warrington looked set for a draw but then up stepped Wharton who raced cleared of the defence and sent a curling shot over Mottram for a dramatic last gasp winner!
