WARRINGTON Wolves suffered their first defeat of the season in the under 19s academy when they were beaten by Leeds Rhinos at Stanningley on Thursday.
The Wolves went into the game having won their opening four games, but the Rhinos were out of the traps early and built up a commanding interval advantage and despite a better showing after half time the visitors were unable to turn the game around.
Leeds took the lead in the fourth minute when quick hands close to the Wolves line saw loose forward George Milton put centre Ashley Handley over in the left corner.
Scrum half Jordan Lilley converted and then six minutes later they swept the ball along the line again and winger Tommy Brierley broke through a tackle to score on the right.
Leeds increased their advantage on 22 minutes when good work by stand off Ben White and Lilley saw them combine to find second row Elliot Minchella, who stepped back inside to score on the left.
Lilley converted but then four minutes later the Wolves got themselves on the scoreboard when a kick on the last tackle by scrum half Declan Patton was fumbled by the Rhinos in their own in-goal area and loose forward Ryan Maneely pounced on the loose ball to score. Centre Harvey Livett added the conversion.
Just after the half hour mark Leeds responded when a bullet pass on the last tackle from White put Minchella through a gap to score at the side of the posts.
Lilley goaled and five minutes before the break a superb move by the Rhinos saw them go from deep inside their own half to go in front of the Wolves posts and a quick play the ball saw hooker Robbie Ward put Milton over on the left. Lilley converted to make the half time score 28-6 to the Rhinos.
The Wolves came out stronger in the second half, spending long periods pressurising the Leeds line but they were unable to breach the dogged defence and it was Leeds who got the next score on 65 minutes when slick handling out wide saw the ball reach full back Ashton Golding, who linked into the line to score wide out on the right.
Shortly afterwards both sides were temporarily reduced to 12 men when Wolves centre Toby King and Leeds substitute Ben Frankland were sin binned following a skirmish and then three minutes from time Rhinos scored their final try of the night when Ward burrowed over from dummy half to score on the left. Lilley converted to complete a deserved 38-6 victory for the home side.
