A HUSBAND and wife duo are keeping things in the family at Birchwood Golf Club having both been named captains for the forthcoming season.
Long-term members Bill and Jan Davies, from Fearnhead, are only the second married couple to take men’s and ladies’ captaincy at the club in the same year.
Bill, previously a captain in 2003, will have his ‘drive in’ on Sunday, while debutant Jan hit her first shot as captain at the weekend.
“There was a bit of pressure to hit a big drive as all the ladies come out to watch,” said the 66-year-old. “We always have a wager and guess how far you will hit the ball!
“It’s nice for us both to be captain because we’re always both playing at the course anyway. We’ve had a good reception.”
Jan joined founding member Bill at the club 24 years ago and former captain Nora Mulvey believes they are a popular choice.
“They are both very active participants at the club,” she said. “They’re a great couple and very well liked, so proved a popular choice.
“The ladies’ drive-in is a fabulous day and officially starts our year. Nobody minds what happens but pride wants you to hit it reasonably straight!”
