A NUMBER of anglers were caught last week fishing night sessions when not booked on or without a night permit.

This is against our rules and prevents members from making full use of pegs.

We allow junior members to fish at night when accompanied by a parent, who must be a member or hold a night permit and be appropriately booked on. Parents can opt to apply for another member to accompany their child.

The fourth round of the Cheshire Spring League was fished on the Macclesfield Canal on Saturday and although Bob Campbell, top of the leader board, scored three points, arch rival Phil Cross only managed four. Bob leads on six points from Phil on eight.

Following is Martin Griffiths on 11, who won with 5-10-0 including a 1lb skimmer and chunky perch. Although the win hardly compensated for a pole he broke in three places. Graham Belton was runner-up with an all roach net for 4-7-0.

Barry Chambers’ first success since October came in the Disabled and Over 60s on Monday with 4-12-8, including a bream of 1.5lbs taken on his first cast, his next cast snaring its similarly sized mate. Runner up was George Barber with 3-14-10.

Rixton Claypits is consistently producing skimmers and bream along with a few tench to mainly maggot. However, the carp are now starting to feed with fish reported to 20lbs.

At Grey Mist Mere on Friday Brian Yardley caught a quality tench he happened to catch as I was passing, this was followed by three more weighing in at 5lbs, 5-3-0, and 5-6-0. He tempted all the fish using a maggot feeder and lost an even bigger fish.

Grey Mist Mere is closed on Saturday April 5 and Sunday 6 for peg maintenance and removal of litter. Working party starts each day at 10am.

Keep catch reports coming, they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Call me on 01928 716238 or email frank@ warrington-anglers.org.uk
