Warrington 2nd 27 Caldy 3rd 7

WARRINGTON weathered a first half storm before presenting a second half master class of top quality rugby.

They are now just four points adrift of second placed Firswood Waterloo, with a game in hand, but face a hard final run-in especially in their fixtures against Wirral and De La Salle in April.

The first half of this game developed into a prolonged arm wrestle with Warrington eventually coming out on top up front, although it was Caldy who claimed the only points of the half with a penalty.

Having tamed and tired the Caldy forwards, Warrington unleashed their backs in the second period to put together some of the best rugby seen at the ground all season.

First of all, winger Rob Evans, in his first game for the club sizzled over from 40 yards.

Shortly afterwards, Matt Rockey kicked a penalty before showing his scintillating talents by striding through a narrow gap and crossing between the posts.

The centre converted his own try.

Tom Arnold then demonstrated the best of a full back’s arts by joining an attacking line at an incisive angle, splitting the defence and finishing off in the corner.

The side’s only defensive lapse of the match let Caldy in for a late try but Warrington closed off the result when Tom Arnold combined cleverly with Rob Evans and the electric new winger beat three tackles before sprinting to line and touching down between the posts, to simplify Matt Rockey’s second conversion.

“Our second half performance was the best I’ve seen this season,” said captain Andy Almond.

“We have a difficult four games ahead of us but if we play like this anything is possible.”
