HARRIET Knowles-Jones was the star performer for Warrington Athletics Club at the Inter County Cross Country Championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham on Saturday, March 8.

Representing Cheshire in the under 17s women’s race Harriet and Lydia Turner the English national champion from two weeks ago battled together for most of the race before Harriet broke clear on the final hill to take the UK gold medal by 9secs in 18mins 31secs.

Harriet also won the British Athletics Cross Challenge series overall.

She was trailing Lydia Turner by two points prior to Saturday’s race but with double points on offer she scored two more than Turner which meant that they were level on points.

The title went to Harriet as she won Saturday’s race which was the final.

The Cheshire team finished in third place in the team competition.

Warrington’s Alysha Goddard was the fourth counter in the Cheshire team, finishing 73rd in 21mins57secs.

In the under 15s girls’ Lauren Ferris was the first from the club to finish in 60th place in 18mins 55secs with Sarah McGrail and Melissa Boyer finishing close together in 112th and 120th places with times of 19mins 44secs and 19mins 49secs, respectively.

Lauren Goddard was the final runner from the club in this race finishing 173rd in 20mins 34secs.

In the under 13s boys’ race Sam Evans and Ben Harrison were the representatives from the club with Sam running well to finish in 25th place in 11mins 14secs and Ben finishing 269th in 12mins 57secs.

In the under 15s boys’ race Owen Lee finished in 98th place in 17mins 48secs while Jack Stubbings was 149th in 18mins 20secs.

In the under 17s men’s race Daniel Evans was in 47th place and Liam Burthem was close behind in 61st place with 19mins 48secs and 19mins 58secs, respectively while Leighton Sharman was 178th in 21mins 19secs.

The final runner from the club was Cameron Field in the under 20 men’s race running well to finish in 26th place in 26mins 57secs.

The Cheshire team finished in third place in the team competition with Alysha Goddard being the fourth counter.
