Warrington Guardian: Weaver learns lessons from doubles defeat Weaver learns lessons from doubles defeat

CLAIRE Weaver admits she was served a harsh lesson at the English National Badminton Championships, but the Warrington teenager is eager to put the experience to good use after reaching the quarter finals at stadium:mk.

The 19-year-old made her way through to the last eight of the women’s doubles at Milton Keynes along with partner Kerri Scott, where they faced top seeds Heather Olver and Kate Robertshaw.

And the pair, ranked inside the world’s top 30, were ruthless in recording a straight sets victory.

But Weaver, a former Altrincham Grammar School pupil, insists the experience will only make her stronger.

“I was happy to get to the quarters as I thought we had a reasonable chance of it in the doubles,” she said.

“We’ve been properly playing together this year and had a few tournaments last year too.

“It was quite a challenge; there weren’t many gaps in their game and there wasn’t much you could exploit. They were just very consistent.

“It was a good experience to play them though – we can set an example for ourselves now.

“Even though I didn’t get that far in the singles I think I played ok.

“I was quite happy with the tournament generally and it’s a great experience to get to play the great players.”

Studying at Oxford University has complicated her training over the past six months, but she is planning to come back with a bang later this year.

“I don’t have any tournaments lined up at the moment because now I’ve moved to university it’s harder to train,” she added.

“I’m planning to work hard over the summer, come back early and prepared next season and go from there.”
