THREE of Warrington Athletics Club’s young athletes travelled to the EIS Sheffield on Sunday for the under 13s and under 15s Northern Indoor Championships.

Twelve-year-old Sam Evans made it two regional championship medals in eight days after taking silver at the inaugural under 13 boys’ indoor 800m, to add to the bronze he won at the Northern Cross Country Championships last week.

The Bridgewater High School pupil took a rest from his winter cross country exploits to gain valuable experience of the strict rules at high level track and field championship events and his tactics were to take an early lead.

Making a quick getaway from the gun, Evans led the field until the final 100m, when a sprint finish from eventual winner Scott Nutter (Barnsley), relegated Evans to second and a well deserved silver medal with a time of 2mins 24.02secs, an indoor best.

There was a medal, too, for his teammate Fisayo Williamson-Taylor in the under 15 boys’ age group.

Taking part in the 60m and 200m events, Williamson-Taylor won his 60m heat and semi final before finishing third in the final witha time of 7.55secs.

He bettered that in the 200m event, again winning both his heat and semi final before snatching silver in the final with a time of 23.75secs, breaking his previous indoor personal best on each occasion.

Hannah Shaw was the club’s final representative and again, personal bests were broken.

The under 15 girls’ athlete took part in three events, the 60m, 60m hurdles and high jump, finishing seventh in her 60m heat, fifth in her 60m hurdles heat and ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.40m.
