WOOLSTON Rovers have appointed their new head coach.

Lee Westwood will take charge of their National Conference League side immediately following Mike Grady’s move to South Wales Scorpions.

Westwood brings plenty of experience to the role having coached in the Warrington Wolves Academy for several years and he also had a very successful spell at Bank Quay Bulls, helping them to land several trophies during his tenure.

He played much of his Junior rugby at Woolston, and following a spell in the professional game at Warrington Wolves, he returned to Woolston and gained the Man of the Match award in a memorable victory over professional side Chorley Borough in the Challenge Cup that earned Rovers an unforgettable tie against the Wolves at Wilderspool in 2001.

Westwood said: “This is a really exciting opportunity and one that I am looking forward to.

"Woolston are a well-known name in the game. I have very fond memories of my times there during my playing days and I hope to bring success to the club in a coaching capacity. There are plenty of great people involved, both on and off the field, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Rovers chairman Paul Bray said: “The appointment of Lee Westwood as head coach, with all his experience and knowledge, is a continuing step in the development of the club as a whole and we look forward to working together with Lee to drive the club back up to the top echelons of the community game ladder at both senior and junior level.”
