FOUR Warrington Athletic Club runners travelled to Sheffield for the North of England Indoor Championships at the EIS Arena over the weekend.

On the Saturday, Matt Wigelsworth finished 6th in the under 20 men’s 1500 metres in a season’s best time of 4 minutes 12.09 seconds and Jemma Eyre finished 4th in her heat of the under 20 women’s 400 metres in 63.0 seconds - also a season’s best time.

Twenty-four hours later Carys McAulay and Lizzie Smith competed over 800 metres, with Carys winning her heat in 2 minutes 19.90 seconds while Lizzie was second in her heat in 2 minutes 24.39 seconds.

In the final, as they approached the bell for the last lap Lizzie had lost contact with the leaders but Carys had remained in touch and made a move to go into second place with just over 100 metres remaining.

As they entered the finishing straight she moved wide and passed her opponent in the final few strides to take the gold medal in 2 minutes 19.33 seconds, with Lizzie coming home in 5th place in 2 minutes 26.16 seconds.

Caryss time puts her in 2nd place in the under 17s UK rankings and is the leading time by an under 17s Scot, placing her 6th in the overall Scottish rankings.

In the under 20 men’s 800 metres, Matt Wigelsworth returned for his second event of the championships and won his heat in 2 minutes 01.85 seconds.

In the final he made his move as the bell sounded and took the lead in the back straight to take the title in 1 minute 59.38 seconds.
