Prescot Cables 0 Warrington Town 2

WARRINGTON Town gained another three valuable points in their promotion campaign with a battling 2-0 victory away at Prescot Cables on Boxing Day.

Despite being under pressure for long periods in the first half, the hosts were kept at bay through a combination of good defending and poor finishing.

Prescot must have thought they had taken the lead on 24 minutes but had the effort ruled out for offside, before Phil Davies cleared off the line with his head on 33 minutes to keep the game scoreless.

Town’s clinical finishing proved to be the difference and five minutes before the break a rare Warrington attack saw Chris Gahgan slot the ball through for Liam Dawson to slide the ball past the keeper and open the visitor’s account.

Moments later, on the stroke of half-time, Dawson had a chance of a second but was denied by the keeper when through one-on-one.

As if to compound the host’s misery Warrington went two up five minutes after the re-start, Dawson putting Metcalfe clear in the box before a clear push in the back gave the referee little choice but to award a penalty.

Ciaran Kilheeney stepped up to cooly slot the ball home after sending the keeper the wrong way.

Substitute Aaron Bowen then had a chance to make it three, but his shot across the goal bounced back off the post.

Town's on-loan keeper Josh Ollerenshaw saved well with his feet on 76 minutes with the last real chance of the game, but by then the result was never really in doubt.

The Yellows now prepare for a trip to Clitheroe on Saturday, followed by the visit of Northwich Victoria on New Year's Day.
