Important victory for Lymm

LYMM put some daylight between themselves and the National League Three Midlands’ relegation zone with a much-needed victory against fellow strugglers Syston.

With a five-point deduction hanging over Lymm for not cancelling this re-arranged fixture correctly a couple of weeks back, Lymm needed to get back to winning ways or relegation would be staring them in the face.

Luckily the early signs were good, as after 10 minutes centre Tom Bray’s pass sent right winger Matthew Barnes-Smith over for a converted try to open the scoring.

The Leicester-based visitors hit back almost immediately, but Lymm had found a fine vein of scoring form and proceeded to blitz their opponents with tries from Andy Rowley, a second for Barnes-Smith and Cormac Nolan, who also added three excellent conversions to make the score 28-10.

Syston could only reply with a penalty in that time and after suffering the concession of two yellow cards in the second half, they looked unlikely to recover.

The return of Lymm’s vitally important kicking game for this match is hopefully a sign of a recovery, with Rowley and fly half Joe Knowles finding some deep positions with their touch kicking.

From that pressure Lymm extended their advantage, Baker burrowing over from close range then adding a bonus-point winning second from a kick-chase to ensure Syston’s late unconverted try was merely consolation.
