Brough called up for international duty again
6:06pm Thursday 12th December 2013 in Sport
KATIE Brough, part of Great Britain’s senior women’s team to win gold at last weekend’s SPAR European Cross Country Championships, will be back on international duty in Scotland next month.
The former Bridgewater High School runner was named today in the British squad for the annual Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country at Holyrood Park.
It is an event that marked her return to elite-level athletics at the beginning of the calendar year - at the time as a member of Warrington Athletics Club.
She finished 27th, completing the 6km course in 22:25, a marker the 31-year-old will be confident of passing when she travels north of the border after Christmas.
“Running for Great Britain in Edinburgh in January gave me the motivation to work even harder to reach my bigger goal, which was to compete at the Euros,” said Brough, who now runs for Vale Royal.
“I knew I was capable, but my whole year was geared towards making it happen.”
And how she did, finishing as fifth counter – 27th overall – for the British team in Belgrade on Sunday to help them secure the team title.
In Edinburgh, they will be eager to secure a title that they narrowly missed out on to Team Europe last year, while the USA will also pose a stern test for the 36-strong British team.
A dozen athletes have been named in both the senior men’s and women’s squads, with the first six runners to cross the line to count.
The women’s team is captained by Gemma Steel, an individual silver medallist in Serbia on Sunday.
The 25th Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country will be broadcast live on BBC1 from 1.15pm on Saturday January 11.
