A case for the defence

GREENALLS remain among the front runners after a comprehensive victory over Rylands in Cheshire League Division One.
Craig Hoyland bagged two of Greenalls’ three first-half goals after their former striker Ben Slater had given depleted Rylands an early lead.
Chris Rodgers made it 4-1 in the second half and although Rylands pulled a goal back courtesy of Richie Sinker, it was Lee Vaughan who had the final word on behalf of Greenalls, who are fifth in a table that sees only six points separating the top eight.
Dave Parr, manager of 11th-placed Rylands, said: “Although it is true that we had several players missing, it should not be used as an excuse because it should have been an incentive for players to take their opportunity.
“You cannot defend as a team like we did for most of the game at this level, and credit to Greenalls for being clinical in front of goal.”
It started off well enough for the visitors, midfielder Liam Hayes whipping in a corner for unmarked Slater to nod home after four minutes.
Greenalls applied mounting pressure that paid off in the 37th minute.
Rylands were poor in clearing an incoming cross and Craig Hoyland drilled home at the second attempt.
Neil Sutch then leaped high to connect to a deflected corner kick to make it 2-1, although Rylands felt keeper Andy Moor had been impeded.
On the stroke of half time Hoyland showed some fancy footwork to turn away from his marker before powering home a vicious strike.
Pacy winger Rodgers took advantage of a poor defensive clearance by weaving past two Rylands defenders and firing a low shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner for 4-1.
A thunderous 30-yard strike from substitute defender Richie Sinker, returning from a broken elbow sustained in August, reduced the deficit before Vaughan got on the end of a perfectly timed pass from midfield to slot home the final goal.
