James Ratcliffe's golden end to the season
A STOCKTON Heath-born sprinter clinched a national title in Birmingham on Saturday.
James Ratcliffe won gold in probably his last under 15s 300m race, clocking 38.24secs at the UK Youth Development League National final.
The 14-year-old joined winners and runners-up from each of UK Athletics’ Premier Division One regions in a competition comprising the best young athletes from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The Sale Harriers athlete, who lives in Styal, will compete in the under 17s group next season.
“I feel like I’m going out on a high,” he said.
“This is probably the last time I’ll race at 300m.
“I’m pleased that my very last competition at the distance involves me winning the gold at the national finals.
“Next year I’ll be moving up and racing against under 17s, who run 400 metres.”
James was also part of the Harriers team who took silver in the 4x300m relay, as well adding a personal silver to his medal haul with a time of 24.15secs in the under 15s 200m.
A busy summer also saw James crowned Cheshire champion in the 100m, 200m and 300m.
