Sprinters set gold standard

WARRINGTON Athletics Club swooped to five golds in a 12-medal haul during the Cheshire Relay Championship at Macclesfield on Saturday.
The under 13s girls’ 4x100m team got the gold medal ball rolling in the morning as a team of Lara Spiteri, Ellie Hough, Ella Sherratt and Joanna Ravenscroft took the title in 57.4secs and a B team of Isabelle Bunting, Isabel Trevithick, Natasha Ryder and Lauren Bond finished sixth.
Both teams had secured second place finishes in their heats, with the A team making it through in 56.9secs and the B team securing a final spot in 62.1secs.
A team of Alice Clare, Alicia Haywood, Lizzie Smith and Jemma Eyre then took the under 17s girls’ 4x100m title in 53.1secs before Eyre and Smith were joined by Kiara Grady for a gold in the 3x800m in the afternoon clocking 7mins 40.8secs.
However, the under 15s girls’ team put in a superb race to go quicker in their age group with 7mins 33.1secs, as Vicky Ramsbottom, Georgia Aston-Massey and Melissa Boyer scooped gold.
The final gold of the day came in the under 15s medley relay when Boyer, Hannah Shaw, Ellie Baker and Olivia Bush came home in 2mins 45.5secs, while the under 17s team of Eyre, Clare, Smith and Alicia Hunt took the silver medals in 2mins 37secs.
The under 11 girls’ 3x600m A team of Maja Mittag, Charlotte Stokes and Lucia Meloni bagged silver medals in 6mins 19.3secs and were followed over the line by the B team of Lydia Blair, Siobhan Gregory and Ashley Nemits who took bronze in 6mins 34.9secs.
Earlier in the day the under 11s girls’ 4x100m team of Mittag, Stokes, Nemits and Meloni finished fourth in 65secs as under 15s Shaw, Baker, Hollie Byrom and Daralis Bailey’s time of 55.8secs sealed them a bronze.
Shaw then joined Lauren Ferris and Amy Gibbons in the 3x800m and the girls’ under 15s B team were pipped to the silver medal as Gibbons put in a great final leg to finish third in 8mins 10.6secs.
In the under 13s girls’ race Megan Atherton, Ella Gregory and Trevithick took bronze medals with 8mins 48.5secs.
The under 13s boys’ team also made a significant contribution to Warrington’s medal haul as Ben Harrison, Jordan Jones and Sam Evans took 3x800m silver medals in 7mins 56.4secs.
