DRIVERS from Warrington and Lymm took to the track at Oulton Park’s 60th Anniversary event on Bank Holiday Monday during the Gold Cup weekend.
Mark Jones, racing his 1558cc Ford Lotus Cortina Mk in the Historic Touring Cars Championship, dominated 35 cars in qualifying to take pole position by more than a second.
He streaked away from the start line and held a dominating lead to the finish flag, where he arrived more than 10 seconds ahead of the next car, even though his brakes were fading.
Jones also clocked the fastest lap at an average speed of 78 mph.
In the Historic Formula Ford Championship, Stuart Baird was racing his 1600cc Merlyn Mk11 and Phil Nelson from Lymm was racing a 1600cc Hawke DL2B.
Qualifying saw Baird claim eighth on the starting grid and Nelson claimed 20th in a packed track of 29 cars. Baird dropped one place to finish ninth in the race and Nelson came in 24th.
Nelson was also racing his 1600cc Hawke DL2B in the Classic Racing Cars event.
Having gained 17th place in another full grid, second in his class, the race saw him swapping places up and down the order to finish 15th and third in his class.
