ALFORD Hall A got the better of Stag A to lift Warrington and North Cheshire Bowls Association’s Finlayson Cup after a hard-fought final at Monks Sports Club.
Both sides picked up two wins in the opening four matches, with Stag’s Dave Donoghue and Dennis Aldred winning 21-12 and 21-19 respectively to allow Alford A into an eight-chalk lead once John Garratt, 21-13, and Malcolm Cooper, 21-10, had fought back.
Further wins from Jack Hallett, 21-19, and captain Bernard Carroll extended their lead, before Stag started to rally.
Graham Corker’s 21-15 card and a man-of-the-match performance from Stag skipper John Heald, 21-9, turned the game in his side’s favour by one chalk and left the match in the balance entering the final four games. But it was Mark Ashurst’s 21-14 win that ultimately sealed Alford’s victory, though not before Stag’s Mike Jones recorded a 21-20 win.
