Warrington Campus' first team secure first win
8:00am Monday 18th March 2013 in Sport By Daniel Sharpe, Correspondent
WARRINGTON campus men’s football first team secured their first win of the season as they thrashed Liverpool Hope University 5-0 to steer away from the bottom of the table.
Captain Tom Upton opened the scoring before goals from Denzel Edward and Cai Cernyw created a comfortable cushion for the hosts.
Further goals from Rob Herbet and George Leyshon-James sealed the win to ensure last week’s result between the two sides was reversed, moving the Padgate team off the bottom of the table at the expense of their opponents.
The hosts made a shaky start when a defensive error from last week’s goal scorer Jack Weedall let in Micheal O’Brien, but his challenge was deemed legal by the referee despite fierce protests from the visitors.
Warrington soon found their feet and the first real chance of the game fell to Cernyw, but he saw his effort well saved by the Liverpool goalkeeper.
The hosts piled on the pressure and Cernyw brought the visiting keeper into action once again with a stinging shot from inside the area, but Ryan Hanlon couldn’t quite convert the rebound.
Just minutes before half time Warrington’s pressure finally paid off when Upton latched onto a lovely through ball by Mark Boland to slot home and give his side the lead.
Despite the one-goal advantage Warrington showed no sign of complacency and stretched their lead when another through ball opened up the Liverpool defence and Edwards neatly placed his effort past the on-rushing goalkeeper and into the net.
From here on in there was only one team in it, and after Andrew Brown saw his effort parried out, Cernyw popped up once again to slide in the rebound to secure all three points for Warrington.
Minutes later it was four thanks to Herbert’s unstoppable strike, before Leyson-James headed home a fifth to cap a memorable afternoon for Warrington, who could secure safety with a win against UCLAN on Monday.
