Lymm bow out of England Hockey Investec Women's Vase

Lymm Ladies against Oxted. Lymm Ladies against Oxted.

Lymm Ladies 2 Oxted Ladies 3

LYMM suffered heartbreak in the England Hockey Investec Women's Vase despite a distinguished performance against last year's winners from the Surrey Premier Division.

Lymm took an early lead, Jo Hartley expertly deflecting the ball for a penalty corner tip-in.

But Lymm could not extend or hold the lead.

Helen Weston missed a chance close in and sloppy play allowed Oxted into the game through a well-taken penalty corner routine.

The game remained an even contest and 1-1 at half time was a fair reflection of the play.

With a minute barely gone after the re-start Lymm could have felt harshly treated.

Oxted were awarded a penalty corner and carded although Oxted were allowed to escape punishment earlier in the game for the same offence.

The corner was converted and a similar passage of play resulted in a third goal for the away team.

At 3-1 down Lymm continued to battle and the fightback was on when Jayne Buck made it 3-2, but Lymm could not find an equaliser to take the game to extra time.

Oxted finished as worthy winners.

For an excellent all-round display, sweeper Alex Mitchell was nominated best player.
