Effort unrewarded in narrow loss
Vale of Lune 2nd 15 Lymm 2nd 13
LYMM travelled to Lancaster with a young side augmented by the experience of Henderson and Sutton.
The game turned out to be a close affair with the result in doubt right to the end.
Vale started the stronger and were well organised, retaining possession and moving play up the pitch.
Lymm defended well but it was no surprise when Vale score an unconverted try from a driving line out to take a 5-0 lead.
This spurred Lymm into action with Yates, Askew and McCrmack to the fore as they drove at the Vale line. However the home defence held out well and the half time score was 5-0.
Vale again started the second half on the front foot and scored two good tries to extend their lead to 15-0.
At this stage Lymm could have resigned themselves to defeat but they showed great spirit and took the game to Vale.
With a combination of gritty defence and good forward work they attacked Vale and the pressure resulted in a penalty for Lymm converted by Jones.
5 minutes later an excellent backs move from the halfway line involving Griffiths, Halford and Delaney ended with Delaney sprinting in from 22 metres for Jones to convert.
Lymm came straight back from the kick off to press and after continued pressure Jones converted a penalty leaving it 15-13 with 10 minutes to go.
Lymm pressed hard and nearly scored when Halford was tap tackled 20 metres from the line.
However for all their effort the final whistle went and the efforts went unrewarded.
Special mention must be made for Henderson who harried his opposite number all afternoon and the mercurial Sutton.
Lymm: 15) Norman; 14) Millachip; 13) Delaney; 12) Griffiths; 11) Halford; 10) Jones; 9) Henderson; 8) Sutton; 7) Lines; 6) Rashid; 5) Coon; 4) Yates; 3) McCormack; 2) Lewis; 1) Askew.
Other result: Lymm 3rd XV 28 Southport 2nd XV 0
