A LATE equaliser prevented Warrington Campus women’s football team from claiming their first victory of the season as they drew 1-1 with the University of Liverpool.

Warrington captain Taylor Froehling had given the home side an early lead that was wiped out by a controversial last-ditch response from Liverpool’s Vanessa Ng.

The Padgate hosts entered proceedings on a six-game losing streak but started off in a positive fashion when Froehling took advantage of a defensive error despite the presence of an on-rushing goalkeeper.

A dangerously driven corner by Charlotte Kingdom was Warrington’s best chance to double the lead as the break approached, before the visitors forced goalkeeper Mod Phaenthaisong into a string of impressive saves.

Froehling found herself one on one with the goalkeeper for a second time but she could not convert.

Liverpool’s second-half pressure was finally rewarded when Ng’s effort was judged to have crossed the line after an impressive passing move, despite enormous protests from Warrington.

The Merseysiders thought they had won the game with a late effort but the goal was ruled offside as both teams earned a credible and much-needed point towards league safety.
