WARRINGTON Athletics Club's team of cross country runners braved the weekend's cold to run in the North of England Cross Country Championships at Knowsley Safari Park on Saturday.

Brave is certainly the word for one Warrington runner, Georgia Aston-Massey, who lost her shoe soon after the start of the race but battled on to finish in 65th place, even managing to out-sprint two fellow competitors in the final moments.

Aston-Massey then spent the next hour and a half being treated for frostbite in a nearby ambulance, but insisted on getting up for the trophy presentation to celebrate the achievements of her fellow runners.

She had the chance to celebrate victories for two of her Warrington teammates, with the club picking up two individual awards and a team gold during an successful afternoon.

The first gold was won by Harriet Knowles-Jones, whose consistently impressive performances have allowed the under 15 girls' runner to scoop a number of gold medals throughout the season, with this one won by a time of 15mins 45secs.

Teammates Lizzie Smith, Sarah McGrail and Victoria Ramsbottom finished in 11th, 18th and 34th respectively, which was enough to earn the team a gold medal.

The team's final medal came in the under 15 boy's section, in which Daniel Evans used his excellent early pace to propel him into first place with a time of 14mins 29secs.

There were top ten finishes for Melissa Boyer in the under 13 girls' race and Katie Brough in the senior womens' section.
