TESTIMONIAL star Ben Westwood admits he gets fired up when supporters sing about him on match days.

The ‘Super Bennie Westwood’ chant has almost become anthemic at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, while the melodic verse has also tested the atmospheric capabilities of the mighty Wembley and Old Trafford stages in recent seasons thanks to Wolves’ Challenge Cup and Super League successes.

There can be no greater respect paid to a player by fans than a chorus of his name to be ringing around a sporting arena.

With Westwood, it is a tribute in tune with the way the England international plays with his heart on his sleeve every time he pulls on a primrose and blue shirt.

Perhaps the greatest accolade paid to the back rower musically came after Wolves’ win at St Helens’ Langtree Park on September 29, 2012.

Victory sealed Wolves’ first ever appearance at the Super League Grand Final, such an iconic and historical moment for the club.

But as a double decker bus crammed with barmy army supporters left the adjoining superstore car park, they were stamping their feet and blarting out ‘Super Bennie Westwood’ better than it had ever been sung before.

Westwood, the modest man that he is, did not seem to know what to say upon learning of the passengers’ salute.

“I just go out to do my best every week and it’s nice that people notice and get behind us,” he said.

“That’s what I get paid to do.

“But it is nice. I usually have to do something good for them to start singing that song.

“I do enjoy hearing it and I get a real buzz off it. It fires me up a little bit too if I’m honest.”
