Warrington 36 Glossop 3

THE Rockey brothers played an instrumental role in helping runaway league leaders Warrington reach a remarkable 15th straight win when they hosted South Lancashire and Cheshire One rivals Glossop on Saturday.

Having ended 2012 unbeaten, the festive break did Warrington no harm as they brushed aside the divsion’s seventh-placed team with a five-try demolititon, kick-started by Matthew Rockey’s penalty after 10 minutes.

Warrington coach Steve Riley said: “I think our performance was probably at around 70 percent, but we are still the only side to have scored more than three tries against Glossop. “What really pleased me was our determined defence, which ensured that the door was firmly shut whenever Glossop threatened.”

Ten minutes after Matthew had opened the scoring, the brothers combined nicely to create Warrington’s opening try.

Ashley Rockey stole the ball at a ruck and stand-off Andy Roberts caught the defence off guard with a superb half break before sending Matthew over from 40 yards.

Warrington’s hold on the game strengthened when Tom Wood wriggled over from a tap penalty, Matthew converting, and though Glossop added their only points of the game from a penalty before the break, the hosts looked unlikely to let their lead slip.

So it proved after the break, as Matthew broke free to score a brilliant solo 70-metre try, veteran Kevin Jones grabbed the bonus-point score and Kieren Hughes completed the rout with a signature interception try from just outside the 22.

Warrington face one of their sternest tests of the season so far when they travel to Hoylake on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.

THE second string also picked up where they had left off before the Christmas break, romping to a six-try victory over hosts Anselmians in Raging Bull Division Two South.

Tries from Daffyd Floyd, Ricky Stewart, two, Steve Pilkington, two and Luke Wood, with kicks added by Matty Drinkwater, helped Warrington secure their fourth straight win, a record they will hope to stretch against Whitchurch on Saturday.

THE pace and guile of Winnington’s young back line proved too much for Warrington’s third string.

Tries from Tony Fretwell, two and Phil Pugh, provided the visitors with something to cheer about, but Park’s four-try haul in the first half alone meant Warrington were playing for little more than pride in the second period.

Warrington u17 33 Wirral u17 0

IT was business as usual for Warrington’s junior colts against Wirral at Walton Road.

Despite the game ending in the first half following a nasty head injury for Wirral’s number two, Warrington still had time to rack up an unanswered 33-point lead during their short time on the field.

A Jack Grey hat-trick and further tries from Joe Wilson and Sam Roberts, with four conversions from Jake Riley, had the Raging Bull Colts League A leaders in a commanding lead by the time the game was halted.
