Warrington Town earn a point in Radcliffe

Radcliffe Borough 2

Warrington Town 2

HAVING fought their way back from a goal down, Warrington Town will be frustrated they were unable to stretch their winning run in the Evo-Stik Division One North.

Instead they had to make do with a point and an extension of their unbeaten run to five matches, as Radcliffe Borough themselves came from a goal down to ensure a share of the spoils.

Manager Shaun Reid made two changes to the starting line up from the 2-0 home victory over Prescot Cables in midweek, John Miles and Kevin Townson replacing Ash Ruane and Steve Porter in the starting line up.

Town made the worst possible start, falling behind in only the third minute after striker Ben Wharton had been given time and space to pick his spot and blast home beyond Town keeper Andy Robertson from outside of the penalty area.

Allan Collins was first to go close for the Yellows, curling his shot wide of the target as Town started to get a foothold in the game.

On the quarter hour Town spurned a great chance to equalise when Kevin Townson charged through on goal only to see his shot well saved by former Town and New Mills stopper James Coates.

But it was a sign that Warrington were getting back into the contest, and soon Phil Mooney met Peter Dogan's throughball to force another excellent save from Coates.

The last two minutes of the half saw the game spark into life, first Koubemba’s shot was well saved by Robertson when through on goal before Town were denied what looked like a stonewall penalty when Townson was pulled over in the area by Borough’s central defender Martin Parker.

Less than 60 seconds later Town found the equaliser their possession deserved, Phil Doran seeing his powerful free kick deflected to restore parity at the break.

The Yellows emerged stronger in the second half, making chances through Townson that once again required Coates to keep his side in the contest.

Only for so long, however, as Town finally took the lead on 55 minutes thanks to Phil Mooney’s powerful drive being parried into the path of the grateful Allan Collins to make it 2-1.

Their lead was short lived, Borough equalising four minutes later when defender Laquan Esdaille was allowed a free header to ensure his side a share of the points.

Both sides had chances to steal victory in the final 20 minutes, but a combination of further strong keeping and the offside flag meant that Warrington returned home with a draw.

Town: Robertson, Davies, Doran, Dogan (c), Flynn, McCarten, Mooney (Ruane, 84), Reid, Collins, Miles, Townson (McEvilly, 67).
