Warrington's first big DJ, the Longford Lover, speaks to reporter Nicola Davies about his memories of when the Rolling Stones came to town.

IN 1937 the Longford Lover came from heaven' said the long-haired Lothario, whose real name is Chris Culleton of Dale Lane in Appleton.

During his 70 years, the former DJ, who gave himself the name Longford Lover' because of his reputation with the ladies, has rubbed shoulders with rock icons, smoked Mick Jagger's cigarettes and kissed Tina Turner on the lips.

Sitting in his lounge, the former band and Carlton Club manager, said: "You could barely hear the Stones playing for the screams.

"It was 45 years ago when they came to the Parr Hall (November 25, 1963). I was compèring at the time.

"It was jam-packed. In those days there was no strict control over how many people got in and there was no alcohol either - you could get soup or soft drinks.

"On the night of the show I was in charge of the dressing room and the stage and the Stones got mobbed as they were coming off.

"They couldn't get to the dressing room so I got John Dooley, who was 6ft 7ins, to stand by the dressing room door and I grabbed them one by one by their hair and pushed them into the room as girls were trying to pull their clothes off.

"During the show I had nipped into the dressing room and saw two girls going through their stuff.

"Mick Jagger had left his cigs and cigarette lighter and one of the girls had them, so I took them off her and pushed them in my pocket for safekeeping.

"After the show there was so much pandemonium I forgot about it so I ended up smoking the cigs and giving the lighter to a friend!"

Chris recalled that the rock stars were very polite, drug and drink free and nothing was too much trouble for them.

He added: "That night I was wearing a nice suit and a bright waistcoat an old woman had made for me and Brian Jones was in love with this waistcoat and wanted to buy it but I wouldn't sell it. "Then they offered me a job as their PR person but at the time I was courting a girl and I didn't fancy leaving her to go to London.

"That's one of my regrets. All of my regrets are through women," he laughed.

He's got a picture of himself with The Stones from The Parr Hall gig.
The Stones look like kids and 'The Longford' has got nice neat short hair and a smart suit! Great picture and a great bloke, got him out of 'retirement' to DJ my 18th in 1988!

As another old group member I second the letter from Bob in Wales. Chris was one of the first true DJ`s, along with a Mr Pete Rigby. They both had the area tied up with DJ gigs and management. Chris was the first manager of my group `The Rockin Rivals` and through him we did a Radio Luxemburg `Night at the Cavern` taking a coachload of fans along from Warrington. Through him I have a lot of fond memories of my youth which I wouldn`t swap for anything. The Hogey Wagon, the Baths Hall creaking under the weight of 200 dancers. And of course, the Parr Hall where Frank Bell productions put on a top ten act every Monday night. Chris Culleton was always in the thick of it when it came to the music scene and to my era, will always be an icon of the Warrington scene from the `60`s.

A lot of us 'old' beat group members around in Warrington, especiall

y in the early 60's,have fond memories of Chris, the 'Longford Lover'.He did so much to help promote local bands at the Co-op, Bell Hall,Labour club etc etc.We were managed by him ,and he would appear on the night in full robe , a gent, complete with stick and hat, hilarious !!When sober,a pretty quiet deep guy,but a few magic pints and chris was off into his bizarre world of self composed songs, including the famous'I'm the Longford Lover, and you can't catch me '!!!! Other memories flash through my mind,Chris at the Hogey, usually 3am,Chris asleep in hedgerows somewhere round town ,Chris and his 'Warrington Night out at the Cavern'with Bruce Harris and the Cavaliers,The Vogue,The Flamingoes,The megatones and us The Templars !That was 18th feb, 1965,still got the poster. Chris was also a friend of HRH THE QUEEN,yes they met,and also a great pal of Brian Conley, rip,of The Sweet.Glad to see he's got a much deserved mention, a great character, and a true Irish. Are his bros. still alive ? Cheers Bob.

y in the early 60's,have fond memories of Chris, the 'Longford Lover'.He did so much to help promote local bands at the Co-op, Bell Hall,Labour club etc etc.We were managed by him ,and he would appear on the night in full robe , a gent, complete with stick and hat, hilarious !!When sober,a pretty quiet deep guy,but a few magic pints and chris was off into his bizarre world of self composed songs, including the famous'I'm the Longford Lover, and you can't catch me '!!!! Cheers Bob.
