A GROUP aiming to tackle litter on the streets has called on residents to make an effort this Christmas to keep Latchford clean.

Victoria Park Residents Association (Vipra), based at St Hilda's Mission, on Slater Street, carried out a community clean-up last month but admits it is struggling to keep on going due to a lack of numbers.

Now with Christmas around the corner, vice-chairman Ken Wormald has issued a plea to others in the area to help keep the streets litter-free.

"With Christmas you just don't know what is coming up," he said.

"Hopefully with it being Christmas, people will think again about dropping litter.

"With us being based along the long path on the way back from town, people walking back sometimes tend to dump litter on the streets rather than in the bin.

"Hopefully the group can keep going but it has not been easy - we have had some tough times and had to battle to stay as we are."

Despite the fears of additional waste during the festive period, Mr Wormald was quick to acknowledge those who have helped.

"It is great to see people getting involved to help us out," he added.

"The police community support officers and local councillors have helped out a lot, and of course our volunteers."

Vipra is calling for anyone interested in helping to get in touch.
