THE next generation of engineers had the chance to get some hands-on experience with robotics and hydraulic technology when Energy and Climate Change Minister, Baroness Verma attended Sellafield Ltd at its Fab Lab event last week.

A group of 15 students from Sir Thomas Boteler High School were mentored on digital manufacturing technology by some of the Sellafield Ltd apprentices, graduates and the staff.

The students then took part in a competition to design, build and test robotics.

Baroness Verma, who presented each winner with a prize, said: “I was very impressed with the students’ work today and the help and advice given to them by Sellafield’s current trainees.

“Today’s Fab Lab challenge, part of Tomorrow’s Engineers week, is a great example of Sellafield’s approach to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

“The right skills and training can really open doors to a whole range of exciting career options for young people so it’s great to see Sellafield and many others rising to the challenge.”

Daniel Mould from the Sellafield Ltd graduate scheme, who took part in the event, said: “The company gives us time away from our day job to attend events like this as they are keen for us to engage with young people about the exciting careers available in the nuclear industry.

"It’s great to be here to see the school pupils getting genuinely enthused by all the technology we have been showing them."
